When asked to substitute in another group, it is helpful to keep in mind a few things. Here is a quick list to get you started:

  • Confirm time and location – get room number if needed
  • Confirm position you are ringing
  • Ask about level of music rung by the group
  • Ask about the pieces to be rehearsed
    • Listen or preview the pieces if you have time (many handbell publishing companies have a digital preview or mp3 available for their inventory)
  • Check out the church or organization website for any significant events like a mission trip or concert
  • Bring your own gloves
  • Bring a pencil
    • Confirm with director that it’s OK to mark the music
    • Offer to contact absentee ringer with any changes
  • Know the name of the ringer for whom you are serving as sub (especially if the group members move positions)
  • Keep chatter to a minimum
  • Follow the members lead – if they own up to mistakes, you do the same
  • Have personal calendar available in case you are asked about future dates
  • Bring your own group’s information like upcoming concert flyer
  • Bring information about your Area’s events and activities
  • Take names of any ringers that offer to sub in your group
  • Be prepared to pitch in as much as you can with the set-up & tear-down process
  • Consider staying (briefly) for any social time after rehearsal

Many thanks to members Cameron Carter (Area 3) and Emlee Kohler (Area 1) for their editorial review.
