I joined the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers in 1990. Like most people at the time, I joined because of the church I served as a handbell director. At the time, I joined because it was what I thought I was supposed to do.

I didn’t know much about handbells beyond playing and conducting at my church and attending Area and National Handbell Festivals. It wasn’t until I attended my first National Seminar (the Directors’ Seminar at the time) that I realized the breadth and scope of this wonderful organization. Joining Handbell Musicians of America (HMA) has been one of the most impactful decisions of my life. It’s not just an organization; it’s a vibrant community that has shaped my career, enriched my life, and given me countless reasons to gather with fellow enthusiasts across the United States.

From the moment I became a member, I was welcomed into a network of handbell enthusiasts who share my passion. This community has been a constant source of inspiration, support, and camaraderie. The friendships I’ve formed through HMA are invaluable, and the shared experiences have created bonds that go far beyond music.

HMA has provided me with a wealth of resources that have been crucial in my journey as a musician. The professional development opportunities, including webinars and seminars, have helped me hone my skills and stay updated with the latest in the field. The rehearsal and teaching resources, lesson plans, and countless articles in Overtones have been instrumental in improving my teaching techniques and enhancing my music programs.

Being part of HMA has opened doors to numerous professional growth and networking opportunities. I’ve connected with like-minded groups of peers, found leadership opportunities, and participated in events tailored to my different needs as a director and performer. Whether in schools, churches, or community groups, resources and experiences from HMA have significantly contributed to my career development and personal growth.

Most importantly, HMA is a community dedicated to promoting and developing the art of handbell and handchime ringing. By being a member, I support this mission and contribute to the growth and excellence of the handbell community. Furthermore, I ensure that there is a place where the next generation of musicians who play handbells can gather and grow.

My membership in the Handbell Musicians of America has been a cornerstone of my musical and professional journey. The connections, resources, and opportunities provided by HMA have enriched my life in countless ways. If you share a passion for handbells, I encourage you to continue to support this vibrant and supportive network. Invite someone new into the fold of the Handbell Musicians of America. Together, we can continue to promote and develop the unique art of handbell ringing.
